Hormones Control Fat

Where did so many fat people come from? Go outside and you will see a whole army of overweight men, women and children. Maybe earlier we met fat people, but now we are witnessing a global epidemic of obesity. Why did there suddenly become more such people? Moreover, what is the reason for their difference from bodybuilders and supermodels – modern models of beauty and attractiveness?

How hormones help control body fat?
You gain weight when you get more energy from food than you spend on metabolism and physical activity. It seems that getting rid of fat is very easy – eat less, move more. Unfortunately, this is only apparent simplicity. Your body has a very complex system that controls weight constancy. When you lose weight, she comes into play, trying to bring your body back to its original weight. The same mechanisms prevent excess weight gain when you overeat.

Cells, tissues and organs are always trying to maintain balance. Break it and your body will resist it in all ways. Fat cells are no exception. They store fat. If they lose weight, they think you are “robbing” them, and use hormones and various chemicals to help restore their original stores. These chemical controllers increase appetite and slow down metabolism to replenish lost fat stores.

This is the main regulator of fat. Special genes track the fat content of cells and regulate it through appetite and metabolic rate. When you overeat but do not move much, fat cells release leptin, a substance that sends messages to your nervous system asking you to reduce your appetite and speed up your metabolism. In the early 90s, scientists considered leptin to be the main means of fighting obesity. When it was administered to overweight mice, the animals lost weight. Unfortunately, it was not so easy with people.

In obese people, leptin levels are often normal or even higher. This suggests that the problem is with its receptors in the brain.

Scientists have discovered at least ten other substances that work with leptin to control appetite and metabolic rate. Insulin plays a key role here. Scientists even speculate that problems with it may be the cause of leptin inactivity in overweight people.

This hormone released by the pancreas plays a major role in the deposition of subcutaneous fat. It inhibits the activity of a fat-breaking enzyme (hormone-sensitive lipase). In addition, it promotes the transfer of sugar into fat cells, which spurs fat synthesis. This is why diets high in refined sugars cause obesity. The rise in insulin levels caused by the consumption of sugary foods increases body fat by slowing down the breakdown of fats and speeding up their synthesis.

Thyroid hormone, growth hormone, cortisol and testosterone
These hormones also play a significant role in fat synthesis. Adults often lose weight after injections of thyroid hormone, growth hormone or testosterone, especially when their natural levels were previously low. Thyroid hormones increase the rate of chemical reactions in almost all cells of our body, but have the main effect on metabolism.  They also force the body to use more fat for fuel. Testosterone, the main male hormone, also reduces body fat.
